Using information architecture and taxonomy to meet strategic goals

A more powerful approach content structure.

Information architecture and taxonomy are often tools in the tool chest on content-heavy projects. When we’re redesigning a website or intranet or talking about system integrations, “doing IA” or “developing taxonomy” are steps we go through.

We can make this work more powerful by stepping back and asking about current challenges, problems to be solved, and strategic objectives, then creating an approach to address these specific items using IA and taxonomy. Not only does this allow us to create a better solution, but it also lets us evangelize to business leaders and content creators the value of a well-implemented content management system.

Using examples of past projects, we’ll talk about how every content professional has the skills to step back to look at the big picture, help others understand the purpose of a CMS, then choose a good approach to solving the problems. We’ll define information architecture, taxonomy, and metadata and look at why these are fundamental components to a well implemented CMS.

The format of the webinar is a 45 minute presentation and a 15 minute Q&A.

About the presenter

Key Pointe’s founder and principal consultant Theresa Putkey applies content strategy, IA, and taxonomy to solve problems within a content management or digital asset management environment. With more than 15 years experience and expertise, Theresa brings a valuable external perspective to each project. She holds a Master’s of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

Theresa began her career in content management as a technical support analyst, and then moved into technical writing. She turned to requirements analysis and software design to make better software products. As a content strategist, she applies her skills and passion for content and structure to produce great user experiences that meet business needs. She focuses on bridging the communication chasm between business leaders and developers and now acts as a liaison between stakeholder groups with divergent interests and drivers.

Theresa lives with her husband and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Burnaby, Canada. When she’s not solving complex information problems, she can be found swimming in a local ocean or lake, cycling in beautiful British Columbia, attempting to learn Spanish, or traveling the world.
